Fourth of July celebrations scheduled for area seniors

Residents from Passavant Retirement Community wave to the crowd during the Zelienople Fourth of July parade in 2013. Senior centers in Butler County are planning patriotic celebrations ahead of the holiday.

Juicy hot dogs, festive picnics and bright fireworks popping in the night sky ring in the Fourth of July holiday.

For seniors who are looking for a place to celebrate, seniors centers in Butler, Chicora, Cranberry Township, Evans City and Slippery Rock offer celebrations ahead of the holiday.

Every year, the Butler Senior Center celebrates the Fourth of July holiday, said Suzanne Carr, center manager.

“I think it means a lot to veterans and a lot to our seniors,” Carr said. “They have another time to remember and celebrate our history, and all of those good things that are a part of the United States.”

The Butler Senior Center, is located in the Tanglewood Center, 10 Austin Avenue in Lyndora.

The Butler center festivities that start at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday include outdoor games, Fourth of July games and other activities geared to the seniors' interests, Carr said. There will also be a picnic meal.

“We just want to get everyone together for a summer picnic — bring people together,” she said. “The more the merrier.”

Red, white and blue will deck the halls at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Evans City Senior Center in Ritzer Hall at 426 E. Main St. for its holiday celebration.

The Chicora center's celebration Tuesday afternoon is like a family gathering, said Krissy Funkhouser, the center manager. The center is located at the Moose Lodge building, 117 W Slippery Rock St.

Seniors can play cards and get an extra snack, Funkhouser said.

A snack table and bingo will ring in the Fourth at the Cranberry Township Senior Center, said Terrie Walker, the center's manager.

“It's kind of like big party,” Walker said of Wednesday's event.

For the 10 years Walker has been at the center at 2525 Rochester Road, they have offered a celebration for the holiday.

The holiday is important because it celebrates independence, Walker said.

About 25 to 30 people usually attend the gathering at the Slippery Rock Senior Center, located at the Slippery Rock Township Building, 155 Branchton Road, Slippery Rock, said Beth Campbell, center manager.

Fourth of July and red, white and blue bingo is a staple of the celebration, she said, adding the holiday has been celebrated at the center since it opened in the mid-80s.
