Tornado's WPIAL tennis hopes are dashed
The Butler boys tennis team saw its run for a WPIAL title come to an end Friday when the Golden Tornado fell 3-2 to Shady Side Academy 3-2 in the Class AAA championship match.
The Tornado, who went undefeated during the season, had won all three of its playoff contests this week before falling to the Indians.
In the singles matches, Matt Slamecka lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Evan Kowalski lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 and Will Nesbitt won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Zac McCafferty and Stefan Kemp won at No. 1 doubles 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 while Kemper May and Emil Kemp were defeated at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 3-6, 7-6.
Both squads advance to the state tournament. Butler will face DuBois Area at Lakevue Racquet Club Tuesday.
Slippery Rock's offense tallied six runs on 13 hits as the Rockets defeated Oil City 6-5 Friday.Pitcher Morgan Robinson earned the win by fanning 10 and walking one. Despite Sam Struss and Morgan Midkiff each scoring five goals, Seneca Valley dropped an 18-16 decision at Sewickley Academy.Also scoring for the Raiders were Taylor Mayeda (3), Paige Corathers (2) and Ally Zezinka.Seneca Valley (15-3) now awaits its WPIAL first-round playoff opponent.
