KENNEDY TWP — Freeport got to Division I-bound pitcher Jamie Kertes only once Thursday at Fairhaven Park.

But once was enough.

The 15th-seeded Yellowjackets turned their only three hits of the day into two fourth-inning runs and stunned second-seeded Bishop Canevin 2-0 in the first-round of the WPIAL Class AA softball playoffs.

The win marked Freeport's first opening-round playoff victory in more than five years.

"Talk about timely hits. They can't get more timely than those were," Freeport coach Tom Rotto said.

Freeport's Anna Christy began the fourth inning with a single. Micaela Kurn's sacrifice bunt moved her to second and Rachel Grubbs' two-out single snapped the scoreless tie.

Grubbs moved to second on the throw to the plate and scored on Taylor Massant's two-out single.

"That was a big bunt by Micaela," Rotto said. "You ask players to bunt and often they don't get it done. She gave us a good bunt when we needed it."

Madison Rotto made the two runs strand up for Freeport (11-7), striking out 12 while pitching a two-hitter. She survived five walks as well.

The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak for Bishop Canevin, which allowed only 12 runs during that run. Kertes, who will play at Bowling Green (Ohio), struck out seven in the loss.

"Madison pitched a great game, but the whole team made this happen," Coach Rotto said. "I told our girls that they were expected to beat us, to just play loose and have fun. Anything can happen and today it did."

Freeport has won six of its last seven games and plays Burrell in the quarterfinal round Tuesday at a site and time to be determined. Burrell defeated the Yellowjackets 4-3 and 9-3 during the regular season.

All four teams in Section 3-AA — Valley, Burrell, Ford City and Freeport — have reached the quarterfinals. The Yellowjackets finished fourth in that section.

In other games:

• Moniteau won a three-team doubleheader, downing East Forest 11-1 and Karns City 4-1 to win the KSAC.

In the first game against East Forest, Ashley Lominski doubled, tripled and drove in two runs. She also struck out 10 in five innings to earn the win.

In the second game, Holly Colosimo threw a four-hitter and Lominski had a double, a single and an RBI for the Warriors (11-6, 10-4).

Ceanca Everetts had an RBI triple for Karns City.
