Butler, SV volleyball win tourneys

The Butler boys volleyball team won the 11-team Fox Chapel Tournament on Saturday, winning 10 games and losing just two in the process.

Following pool play, the Golden Tornado defeated Bethel Park in the first round, Penn-Trafford in the quarterfinals and Fox Chapel in the semifinals.

That earned Butler a spot in the title match against Central Catholic and the Tornado prevailed 25-18, 25-20.

Dustin DeFrancisis contributed 94 assists on the day and Mike Dreher 39 kills.

Derek Wilbert and Xavier Krause both dropped 24 kills, with Krause adding 27 digs.

Travis Myers managed 16 blocks and Dylan Snodgrass 48 passes.

Butler, which also defeated Hempfield 3-0 on Friday, will travel back to Fox Chapel for a section match Thursday.

• Seneca Valley outside hitter Zach Herrmann was named MVP of the Dover High School Boys Volleyball Tournament, helping the Raiders capture first place at the event in York County on Saturday.

SV went 8-0 in pool play before defeating Freedom (District 11) in the semifinals and Dover in the championship match 25-18, 25-17.

Raiders' setter Cameron Knight was named to the all-tournament team.

Also playing well for SV were Chad Albert, Ben Hart, Brad Parrish, Jack Moran, Doug Coyne, Matt Barrage, Pat Follett and Tim Pecora.

BaseballCollin Williamson, Mickey Fennell, Bobby Swartwout and Mike Hartman each collected two hits in Butler's 7-6 win over section foe Pine-Richland on Saturday.Fennell started the game and earned the win after working five innings.Cody Herald pitched the final two innings to grab the save for the Golden Tornado (5-0, 2-0).

Boys LacrosseCody Bachman exploded for six goals and two assists in leading Butler to a dominating 16-1 victory over Canon McMillan.Tanner Kotch added five scores and a pair of assists, while one goal apiece went to Jake Whann, Alex Guiste, Chandler Harvey, Jake Harrison and Christian Kovach.Josh Jablonski earned the win in net for Butler (2-3).

Girls LacrosseButler's Bailey Kraus scored three goals and Casey Murdick had two, but the Golden Tornado fell to visiting Shaler 13-10.

Track and FieldSlippery Rock High's girls squad finished in fourth place out of 26 teams at the Central Valley Invitational.Many Rockets earned a medal at the event. They include:
