Glomb returns with key shutout

KUTZTOWN — Monica Glomb is back — and West Virginia Wesleyan is out.

Glomb, a 2007 Mars graduate and sophomore Kutztown University women's softball pitcher, had been bothered by migraine headaches earlier this season.

She pitched through the pain, though not easily.

"She kept getting recurring migraines and it was uncomfortable for her," said John Glomb, Monica's father. "She battled through it to help her team."

Glomb's last outing on the mound was April 18 — before Sunday's North Atlantic Region 2 championship game against West Virginia Wesleyan.

"I was sick before, but I'm better now," Glomb said.

And how.

She tossed a four-hit shutout at Wesleyan, striking out five in a 2-0 win. The game was scoreless until the Golden Bears scored both of their runs in the sixth inning.

Sunday's win lifts No. 8 Kutztown (45-10-1) into the super regional against No. 2 Lock Haven (44-5) for the right to advance to the NCAA Division II World Series. The super regional is a best-of-three event that begins Friday at Lock Haven.

"It's pretty exciting," Glomb said. "I can't say we expected this, but I expected to pitch well Sunday. I'd still been working out and practicing with the team. I just haven't pitched much lately."

When Kutztown's other two pitchers — Katlin Arbogast and Mary Hoch — both pitched in Game 6 of the Region 2 tourney, a 9-6 lss to Wesleyan, Glomb got the call and the ball for the deciding game.

Glomb stranded a runner at third with one out in the second inning and allowed two baserunners in a frame only once. She improved her record to 9-2 with a 2.47 earned run average in tossing her seventh complete game of the season.

"That was my first complete game in a long time," Glomb said. "It's hard to throw the whole game in college softball."

Arbogast, a junior, leads Kutztown with a 20-5 record, 1.59 ERA, and 199 strikeouts in 189.2 innings pitched. She has a school-record 748 strikeouts in her collegiate career. Hoch is 17-3 with a 1.64 ERA, 87 strikeouts in 102.2 innings pitched.

Glomb has fanned 101 hitters, walked 237 and allowed 84 hits in 90.2 innings pitched.

"I'm not striking out as many batters as I did in high school," Glomb said. "My goal is to increase those numbers.

"We don't look at anybody as being the main pitcher on the team. We're all part of the staff and we help each other. We all pitch differently, so we complement each other, too."

Glomb said she throws harder than Arbogast, "but Katlin changes speeds so well and always has hitters guessing. I also throw a drop ball on occasion.

"I've learned from watching Katlin pitch. We all learn from each other," Glomb added.

Kutztown won a school-record 48 games last season and can break that record if it gets to the World Series. Coach Judy Lawes, in her 22nd year, is 640-372-2 in her career.

"I knew the team here was good, but I had no idea I was coming to a school with this kind of talent," Glomb said. "It's a good feeling knowing you just have to help out and do your part and not feel like you have to win the game by yourself."

Glomb certainly did her part Sunday.
