GC's Phipps in state finale

HERSHEY — Wes Phipps has another shot at a state title.

Grove City's 182-pound senior won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches Friday at the PIAA Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships.

In a battle of unbeatens, Phipps (39-0) will face off against Burrell's Dakota DesLauriers (45-0) in the championship bout.

This is the fourth straight season Phipps has earned a PIAA medal during his 140-18 career. He took second at 171 pounds last year, third at 160 as a sophomore and fifth as a freshman.

Phipps advanced to the semifinals after pinning Pen Argyl's Dylan Evans with 34 seconds remaining in the third period of their quarterfinal tilt.

The semifinals matched Phipps against Northeast Region champion Joe Mankey of Benton, who entered the bout with a 40-1 ledger. Phipps earned a 12-8 decision to claim his spot in the state championship.

DesLauriers, the WPIAL champion, also won by fall in the quarterfinals before posting a 12-3 decision over Greenville's Tyler Landfried in the semis.

Butler's Brett Sybert scored with 10:49 remaining in the second period to trim Norwin's lead to 2-1, but the Knights closed the game with the final six goals in an 8-1 PIHL Class AAA victory.Rob Barnhart and Jake Tomasovic added assists for Butler.
