Mars girls handle Freeport, 71-30

Four Mars players cracked double digits as the Planets jumped out to a 28-6 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 71-30 win over Freeport in girls high school basketball action Thursday night.

Ali Goetz and Sara Getsy each scored 13 points for Mars (12-6, 7-1). Teresa Dallatore added 11 and Jess Bunner 10.

Zoe Soilis and Macy Smolic each scored eight points for Freeport (6-10, 4-5).

Hickory 42, Slippery Rock 36 — Haley Angerett scored 15 points, but the Rockets couldn't overcome a slow start in a region loss to the Hornets.

Slippery Rock (9-5, 4-3), playing shorthanded because of illness, trailed 9-2 after the first quarter.

Butler 7, Mars 0 — The Golden Tornado boys and girls teams remained unbeaten Wednesday. Co-captains Brandt Fleming with a 544 series and Jacob Cookson with a 543 paced the boys win.Co-captains Brea Suchonic with a 619, Autumn Hepler with a 545 led the girls. Cookson and Andrew Barron had a pair of 200 games for the Tornado boys while Suchonic rolled a 246 and 205, Megan Paul a 203 for the girls.
