SRU baseball tops Rams, 4-1

Junior utilityman Kevin Jovanovich had three RBI and sophomore right hander Kyle Schneider struck out nine Sunday in leading Slippery Rock University’s baseball team to a 4-1 win over West Chester in Auburndale, Fla.

West Chester, the defending NCAA Division II champion, nipped The Rock, 4-3, in Saturday action.

Jovanovich delivered a sacrifice fly in the first inning Sunday, then a two-run single to highlight a three-run seventh. Matt Curtis and Will Kengor had three hits each for SRU (10-4).

Schneider worked 7.1 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits. Right-hander John Kovalik struck out two batters in 1.1 innings pitched to record his fourth save.

SRU dropped Saturday’s game when West Chester’s Austin Benshadle delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Rock ace Lou Trivino took his first loss of the campaign, allowing two earned tuns on eight hits over 6.2 innings. Kengor and John Shaffer had two hits each in the loss.

Track and FieldThree SRU women had NCAA provisional qualifying performances in the javelin Saturday on the final day of the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.Lexi Arnold finished second in the meet with a toss of 44.28 meters. Sam Taylor was third with a throw of 42.51 meters, Kim Goth seventh at 40.00 meters.SRU also had nunerous PSAC qualifiers, including Jenny Picot, Stephanie Case and Janine Powis in the 1,500- meter run, London Parris and Elissa McCune in the 400-meter hurdles, Katelyn Wetzel in the 200, Lexie Nowakowski in the 400 and Breanna Northcott in the shot put.
