KC bounces back with big victory

Gremlins beat Brookville 49-6

KARNS CITY — Karns City’s football team set Friday night’s tone with a 57-yard touchdown pass on the first play of their KSAC Large School Division matchup against Brookville at Diehl Stadium.

Quarterback Jacob King threw the pass to receiver Chandler Turner, setting the tone for the Gremlins 49-6 victory.

Despite the large win, Karns City coach Ed Conto said he saw too many errors to feel thrilled about the win.

“We weren’t really happy at halftime,” he said. “We were very sloppy.”

Conto said the Gremlins (1-1, 1-0) seemed to improve in the second half, but he still saw some persisting issues, mostly with receiving.

“We need to catch more passes,” he said. “I thought Jake threw the ball really well.”

King completed 11-of-17 for 233 yards, but most of his incompletions were dropped balls.

“Pass protection was pretty decent tonight, but we dropped too many balls,” Conto said.

On the other side, Brookville (0-1, 0-1) struggled against their larger opponent. The Raiders stopped Karns City twice defensively in the first half, but what seemed their only shining moment came in the fourth quarter.

Receiver Tyler Park replaced quarterback Seth Ray and threw a few long passes, finishing their only scoring drive with a 14-yard pass to receiver Bryan Dworek. Brookville coach Scott Park said the opportunities were available offensively, but were just out of reach.

“When you have a young team, you don’t make the plays you probably should have,” he said. “We just gotta’ keep moving forward.”

Moving forward, Conto said Karns City will build off Friday’s game to continue developing their mixed-threat offense by improving their passing consistency to match their running numbers.

“We felt pretty comfortable,” he said. “That’s what we’re trying to do, so we’re working toward that.”

Three of Karns City’s touchdowns came from King’s hand and landed in the hands of receivers, Turner, Kaiden Powers and Clay Garing. Powers also scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter.

The Gremlins scored on two other rushing plays, a 3-yard run by Dalton Beham and a 2-yard run by Brayden Fedorek.
