Butler Jr. High takes 3rd at duals

Zack Hunka went 5-0 with three pins and Caleb Baxter 5-0 with one pin as the Butler junior high wrestling team finished in third place at the sixth annual Butler Junior High Duals Saturday.

Butler defeated Hopewell 63-31, Burrell 55-37 and Pine-Richland 61-36 and lost to Hampton 56-36 and Peters Township 48-45. The Tornado had taken leads of 27-0 and 27-3, respectively, but the Talbots and Indians rallied back for the wins.

Other top performers for the Tornado included Mike Vought (4-1, three pins), Austin Birckbichler (4-1, one pin), Hugh O’Neil (2-0) while Hank Finan (three pins), Luke Baranchak (three pins), Nick Roth (two pins), Jacob Stutz (two pins), J.D. Bojanec (one pin) and Donovan Malovich each went 3-2.

Butler returns to the mat at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Hampton, followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m.

n Noah Ferguson had 13 points, David Farmer, Joe Farmer and Terrence Maryland Thomposon had six rebounds each and Bennett BonAnno spearheaded a strong defensive effort as Butler Catholic (10-5) downed Holy Sepulcher 25-23 in eighth-grade basketball action.

John Castello and Stephen Castello had 10 and eight points, respectively, to lead the Hornets.
