Freeport blanks Leechburg in softball opener
Freeport's Kristie Radvan tossed a no-hitter and also hit a three-run homer as the Yellowjackets opened up the softball season with a 4-0 win over Leechburg Thursday afternoon.
It was the junior's first varsity start in the circle.
Radvan struck out 11 and walked just one in the no-hitter.
Mars 11, Butler 0 — Isabelle Berkopec and Marina Manuppelli each went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the Planets' win.
Lindy Lee homered for Mars, which pounded out 19 hits in the five-inning victory.
Niki Schlegel struck out three and gave up just two hits in five innings to get the win.

Karns City 4, Brookville 1 — Alyssa Stitt went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Taylor Ekas 2-for-3 with a double and run scored for the Gremlins.
Taylor Downs earned the win, striking out eight and walking two in a complete game. She allowed one run on three hits.
Baseball
Cade Negley picked up the win on the mound for Butler in a 9-4 season-opening win over Mount Pleasant.
Freeport 16, West Shamokin 1 — Josh Beale homered and drove in four runs for the Yellowjackets.
James Flemm also drove in three runs for Freeport.
Boys Volleyball
Nash Bryan totaled 26 kills and 11 passes to lead Butler to a 3-2 season-opening win over visiting Latrobe.
Matt Wetzel added 23 assists and five blocks and Ryan Bargo nine digs.
The Golden Tornado won the match by scores of 25-16, 26-24, 18-25, 21-25 and 15-12.
Girls Lacrosse
Shannon Doyle scored seven goals as Mars edged Blackhawk 9-7 to open the season.
