Lodge hosts annual Pink Out Night
Butler’s Moose Lodge is hosting Pink Out Night on Sunday, an event organized to raise money for cancer patients. But Bobbi Rock wants people to know that despite the name, the money raised isn’t just for women with breast cancer.
“We help pink but we also help every color of the ribbon” said Rock, who is a breast cancer survivor and organizes the event. “We want to let people know that we’re here to help anyone (who has cancer).”
For the third year in a row, Pink Out Night will be held to raise money for the nonprofit Butler Breast and Women’s Cancer Support Group.
The 25-year-old group is headed by Cheryl Schaefer of Center Township and she describes it as a source for people who are diagnosed and in need of help, guidance and financial support.
The event will start around 7 p.m.
Rock said that the Moose Lodge has agreed to contribute a portion of alcohol sales to the charity and there will also be raffles, basket auction, light snacks, music and a prize will be awarded to someone who exceptionally embraces pink attire.
“We always want to get the word out that there are things in the community that help people,” said Schaefer, who is a breast cancer survivor and has headed the group since 2002.
Rock and Schaefer met in 2013 when Rock was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40. Though Rock had health insurance, there were many out-of-pocket expenses that she had to pay for.
As a single, stay-at-home mom, Rock relied on family along with Schaefer and the group to help her through her period of chemotherapy and surgery.
“Butler is a very, very giving community,” Rock said. “I hear bad things in this area but I’ve seen miracles.”
She continued, “I’m a firm believer in the here and now. I’m not interested in funding research. There’s a bigger need for the personal individual.
And Schaefer’s group, financed through events like Pink Out Night, provides resources for people going through cancer treatment, even if it’s a call at 2 a.m. Rock said, “just to cry.”
