Reduced office hours slated
Some post offices are facing reduced hours.
Tad Kelley, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman, said that hour reductions at 13,000 small post offices throughout the United States are being considered as a part of cost-cutting strategies. He said that the postal service is losing $25 million per day.
“We've made cuts everywhere we can,” Kelley said.
In 2011, the postal service had meetings at small post offices to gauge whether residents would mind if the offices were to be closed.
“We were met with overwhelming negativity,” Kelley said.
In May, the postal service announced a new strategy, called the “POST plan,” designed to keep smaller post offices open with reduced hours.
The post offices being discussed usually do not offer home delivery, are near a larger post office and have only one employee, Kelley said.
In September, the postal service began notifying members of communities with post offices being considered for hour reductions.
Kelley said the postal service sent out surveys initially, and then followed up with community meetings. Following that, changes to the operating schedule were implemented based on the meetings and survey results.

Meetings for offices in Clintonville, East Brady, Forestville and Hilliards have not been scheduled. The meetings will continue nationwide through 2014.
The postal service also is seeking interest from small businesses in affected communities that may want to open village post offices, which are offices operated by a third party but offer many services offered by the postal service.
