Crews answer calls for 14 brush fires

Butler County fire crews were busy Wednesday with 14 calls for brush fires by 5:15 p.m.

A brush fire on Panther Road in Connoquenessing Township spread to a nearby garage at 105 Panther Road during the afternoon.

Fire crews responded to the home at 1:08 p.m. to find the garage in flames and collapsing.Lou Zimmerman, chief of Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Company, said no one was injured. The fire spread to the detached garage, which was a total loss. The house also was damaged.A dollar amount of the damage was not available.

Zimmerman said crews, which included Prospect Volunteer Fire Department, Harmony Volunteer Fire Department, Callery Volunteer Fire Company, Portersville Volunteer Fire Department and Butler Township Fire Department, cleared the scene around 4 p.m.A dispatcher with Butler County Emergency Services said this time of year normally has a high amount of brush fires because of dry weather, windy conditions and many people taking the opportunity to burn refuse gathered over the winter.
