Street projects to begin in city

Butler authority awards contracts

The Butler Redevelopment Authority awarded two contracts Thursday for reconstructing five streets in the city.

A $205,110 contract was awarded to Oakdale-based Independent Enterprises to reconstruct Euclid, Spang, Sumner and Cottage Hill avenues. The work includes sidewalks and 14 curb ramps. Ten of the 14 curb ramps were part of an alternate bid included in the contract.

Independent Enterprises submitted the lowest of three bids opened May 21. Other bids ranged from $199,000 to $233,976, not including the alternate curb ramps.

A $103,000 contract was awarded to Oakmont-based Folino Construction to reconstruct Kaufman Drive from the intersection with Lincoln Avenue to 80 Kaufman Drive.

The project includes removing the existing concrete road surface, placing a geotextile material on top of sand under the existing road, covering the material with stone and then paving with asphalt. Additionally, storm drains will be installed on both sides of the street.

The geotextile material will be installed to prevent the sand from being washed away by stormwater.

Folino's bid was the lowest of five bids that were also opened May 21. The other bids ranged from $111,773 to $135,169.

The Kaufman Drive bids were lower than anticipated, so $35,000 transferred from that project to a multiple street project to cover the cost of the alternative curb ramp work, according to Veronica Walker, the authority's acting executive director.

She said work on both projects will begin as soon as possible.
