Seasons called a success

With an average of 200 fans per game and their last home game scheduled for Friday, the Butler Bluesox and Butler Iron Bucks' shortened seasons due to COVID-19 were called a success Monday.

Butler Parks, Recreation, Grounds and Facilities Authority officials also thanked fans for supporting the teams.

“It was a very successful season,” said Cheri Readie, authority chairwoman. “The community really came out and really showed a lot of support.”

Shawn Manning, organizer for the BlueSox and Iron Bucks, echoed her comments.

“The guys are enjoying it. It's going really well. This year has been a challenge, to say the least,” Manning said.

The teams' schedules were changed at least six times before play began due to the pandemic, he said.

The Bluesox's record was 11-10 and the Iron Bucks were 10-11 as of Monday, and the rest of the teams in the Tri-State Collegiate League have records around .500, Manning said.

The authority approved one-year contracts with Deborah Tincha of Butler as the sales representative for sponsorships at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park and with stadium operations manager Dean Selfridge. Tincha will be paid 20 percent of her net sales as compensation. Selfridge will be paid $20 an hour for working 20 hours a week.

In other business, the authority instructed solicitor Tom Breth to look into liability issues if a staff member uses an automated external defibrillator on a fan or player. The authority is considering buying a device.

Selfridge said a player was hit in the face with a line drive and blacked out during a game Sunday.

He said more first aid supplies are needed at the ballpark.

The authority also increased the cost of renting the two first base suites from $90 to $1,000 and 15 season tickets.
