DONEGAL TWP — Speed was a factor Friday night when a car driven by a Butler man struck an embankment along Gameland Road, slid on its driver’s side, hit another embankment and rolled over at least three times before stopping in a yard, state police said.

The man, 50-year-old Kurt W. Camus, suffered major injuries and was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following the 9 p.m. crash.

No information on Camus’ condition was available Monday evening. According to a police report, Camus was cited for driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked.

Camus was alone in a Mercedes-Benz C Class and traveling south when the accident occurred at 929 Gameland Road.

Cody Craig, chief of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department, said Camus was inside the car when firefighters and a Chicora-Petrolia Emergency Medical Service crew arrived.

They got the man out of the car without extrication.

“The patient was found still in his vehicle. EMS was able to remove the patient from the vehicle,” Craig said.

He was taken by ambulance to nearby Iman Road and flown to the hospital.

Firefighters said Camus was unresponsive.

Cpl. Mike Lewis, of the state police, Lewis said there were no indications that alcohol was a factor in the crash, but a blood test might be needed.

“Speed was definitely a factor,” Lewis said.

The car was severely damaged.

The first embankment and the mailboxes the car struck are in front of Scott Cartwright’s house on Gameland Road.

He said he heard a crash from inside his home, but didn’t know what happened until he went outside.

“I heard him hit the mailboxes,” Cartwright said.

The car landed in a neighboring yard.

“There’s a gas well down there. I’m surprised he didn’t hit,” Cartwright said.

The fire department closed the road while state police examined the scene.
