Saxonburg has new mayor

Bill Gillespie

SAXONBURG — A familiar face has been named the new borough mayor.

Borough Councilman Bill Gillespie on Wednesday night was appointed by borough council to be the mayor. He replaces Pam Bauman, who died of cancer on Feb. 18.

Bauman was elected mayor in 2013.

Gillespie, 67, has been on council for 20 years. He said he ordinarily would not seek the office of mayor, but chose to in this case to continue the work that Bauman did.

“I’ll try to do the very best I can to help carry on what Mayor Bauman did,” Gillespie said.

He said the way the borough is now is far beyond what it was like before Bauman got involved.

“She did an amazing job,” Gillespie said.

He said he is honored to take the mayor’s position, which he will hold until the end of 2017. He will not get any pay for being mayor.

A North Carolina native, Gillespie moved to the borough in 1991. He is self-employed, and has two sons with his wife.

Gillespie was one of three people to send a letter of interest for the mayor’s position. The other two were Brian Antoszyk and Dave Johnston.

With Gillespie vacating his council seat, the borough will have to appoint someone to fill it.

Council will vote on a replacement at 7 p.m. March 30.
