Overloaded power strip sparks fire

CONCORD TWP — An overloaded power strip was blamed for an accidental fire Monday that forced a family of five out of their mobile home on Cartwright Road, authorities said. No one was injured.

The family called 911 shortly before 11:30 a.m. after they noticed smoke coming from an electrical outlet in a bedroom, said Cody Craig, chief of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters saw smoke coming from the double-wide trailer when they arrived.

A crew went inside and used a pressurized water can fire extinguisher to put out the blaze, Craig said. The fire was contained to the bedroom.

The bedroom sustained fire damage and the rest of the home had smoke damage.

Craig said an investigation determined the cause to be the power strip.

“There were multiple items plugged into it,” he noted.

The family was planning to stay with relatives after the fire, until the home was inspected.

Assisting the Chicora VFD were firefighters from Petrolia, Bruin and West Sunbury.
