Constance Codispot

Constance Codispot

Constance D. “Connie” Codispot, 83, of Butler passed away Friday afternoon at her home.

Born Dec. 25, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Eugene J. Smith and Magdoline (Szalai) Smith.

She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church.

Mom was a stay-at-home mom and raised six kids; one girl and five boys. We are all one to two years apart in age, so she had her hands full.

Her parents owned a bar on the South Side called the Viaduct Inn, and as we got older, Mom was a bartender for many years. They say listening is a bartender’s skill, and Mom had to listen to a lot from six children. She was quick to offer an opinion, but accepted and loved all of her children and grandchildren unconditionally as they moved through the various challenges in life. She was left heartbroken at the loss of her daughter and her son.

As a kid, Mom marched in the Catholic Daughters of America Drum and Bugle Corps until she was 18 years old, and then she went on to the Junior Catholic Daughters of America Court, Butler 443. Mom was very proud of the time she marched with the Catholic Daughters, and still had her marching uniform.

Mom also had a huge love of theater. She would go to see three or four Broadway shows per year, and had a collection of autographed posters of the shows that she saw, which she hung around her home for people to see. It gave her an opportunity to relive those performances. Her favorite show was “The Lion King.” She and my brother, Dave were fortunate to have been able see it for a second time last year. I share this passion for theater and it is something I will continue to do with my best friend and mother; she will have a front-row seat in Heaven to see them with me.

Surviving are her four sons, Joseph Codispot of Butler, Leonard Codispot-Anderson of State College, David Codispot of Pittsburgh, and Eugene Codispot of Butler; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Eugene Smith Jr. of Fombell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Codispot; one daughter, Deborah Smith; one brother, Ronald Smith; and one sister, Victoria Smith.
