Man continues to be held on DUI, escape charges
A Wisconsin man, charged with driving under the influence and then later escaping, will continue to be held in the Butler County Prison after a bail reduction request was denied in county court on Wednesday.
Butler County Judge Timothy McCune denied the bail reduction for Jamal A. Idow, 21, of Milwaukee, who is being held on a total of $165,000 bail on charges in two cases, including misdemeanor DUI and related summary traffic violations as well as misdemeanor escape.
Idow's attorney, Public Defender Kimberly Hudak, said her client has been working with the county Center for Community Resources to secure housing while his cases are pending, and asked that he be released on his own recognizance or pretrial supervision.
Assistant District Attorney Richard Bosco argued that Idow has no ties to the community and has already tried to escape custody once.
McCune denied the request, saying bail could be revisited at Idow's Oct. 3 status conference.
The charges stem from an incident on June 30, when Slippery Rock police said Idow was pulled over on South Main Street near Kiester Road, after his vehicle was seen crossing over the center line two times.
He was found to be intoxicated, police said, failing at least one field sobriety test before he declined further testing.
A breath test showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.141 percent, police said.
He was arraigned and bail was set at $15,000 in that case.
The escape charges come from an incident following arraignment. While the officer was attempting to take Idow to the Butler County Prison, he broke free from the officer's grasp and ran off while still handcuffed behind his back, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
He ran around the Diamond Street area in Butler and was later found hiding underneath a parked vehicle, the document states.
Idow was then arraigned on that charge and bail was set at $150,000 in that case.
He is scheduled for further court proceedings.
