Pennsylvania American Water has begun conducting door-to-door canvassing of its customers in Butler County to determine what material their water service lines are made of and whether they need replaced.

The company is in the process of identifying and replacing all water service lines made of either lead or galvanized steel, to comply with mandates imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency to identify and replace all lead and galvanized steel service lines.

The process is currently underway in the City of Butler, Butler Township and Penn Township. It will expand to include a total of 17 municipalities.

According to a news release from the company, the canvassing will eventually reach nearly 5,500 customers. Other targeted municipalities include Connoquenessing, East Butler and Saxonburg; as well as Connoquenessing, Donegal, Forward, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lancaster, Oakland and Summit townships.

The company noted all of its representatives will be wearing high-visibility vests with a company logo and carrying company identification.
