Butler attorney representing former Armstrong County Jail employee accused of assaulting baby

A Butler attorney is representing a former Armstrong County corrections officer who police said admitted to assaulting his 2-month-old daughter.

Jakob Craig Hankey, 22, of White Township, Indiana County, called Indiana County 911 the night of June 19 to report his daughter slipped out of Hankey’s arms after he tripped over the dog, and she fell about six inches before hitting her head on a changing table, according to charging documents. He reported the baby was then limp but awake and breathing slowly.

State police in Indiana said Hankey changed his story in interviews the night after the incident. He was charged June 21 with two felony counts of aggravated assault, felony child endangerment and misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

Hankey is represented by attorney Michael Zunder of Zunder and Associates in Butler.

The daughter was taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center where a nurse referred the case to child and youth services. The child was then flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

A doctor said the baby had suffered a brain bleed and multiple skull fractures that “are highly concerning for physical abuse, and history may not be consistent with injury,” according to charging documents. Police said the baby was also experiencing seizures.

Police said Hankey was uncooperative and gave conflicting accounts of what happened during interviews June 20.

Hankey later said he arrived home with his daughter the night of June 19, and she began to cry. Hankey told police he got her out of the car and squeezed her twice before letting go, according to charging documents.

Hankey said he then picked her up put her on a changing table and smacked her twice in the head with his hand. He then called 911 when her eyes looked different.

According to Armstrong County Jail Warden Jessica Hicks, Hankey was suspended without pay from his correctional officer position effective June 22, the Indiana Gazette reported.

Because of Teamsters Local 538 union regulations, the jail is required to undergo a process that maintains Hankey’s rights as a jail employee as the legal matter he’s involved in unfolds, it reported.

Hankey’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. July 23 before District Judge Anthony Sottile III.
