BUTLER TWP — The Butler Township Board of Commissioners unanimously approved two plans at their Monday, July 6, meeting that will increase the number of parking spaces at Pullman Recreation Complex.

The first motion set specifications and opened bids to build a new parking lot, which will include 200 spaces for cars and eight spaces for coach buses.

The new lot will be built on land across Hansen Avenue from the recreation complex. The township already owns the land, according to county property records.

Commissioners also approved an agreement to buy eight acres on Hollywood Drive for $400,000. Commissioners said they planned to use the land to add an additional 160 parking spaces.

The land, located northwest of the complex, includes a former water tower, which the commissioners said they plan to demolish.

Township manager Tom Knights explained that, as the Pullman Recreation Complex has grown, the need for more parking has become obvious.

“As this facility grows, we are definitely strapped for parking,” Knights said. “Come on down on a busy weekend. You’ll see where we overflow already onto the medical facility and we don’t want to be a burden to them. We want to be an asset to the public.”

Knights said the township plans to award the contract for the Hansen Street parking lot project in August. No date was set for work on the Hollywood Drive lot.
