Butler Township auto dealership among 7 named as victims in check fraud scheme

A New Kensington man is accused of a fraudulent check scheme that affected multiple auto retailers in Allegheny, Butler and Westmoreland counties, according to charges filed recently by state police in Greensburg.

Timothy Paul Bierly, 30, was apprehended April 22 at Bud Smail Motorcars in Westmoreland County after dealership staff called police concerned about Bierly. The dealership told police a vehicle Bierly previously sold them was stolen, and he had newly reached out about selling a Chevrolet Tahoe.

Police said Bierly was filling out a fraudulent check when he was apprehended and noted that he had arrived at the dealership in a black GMC Sierra Denali from Baglier Buick GMC in Butler Township.

Police listed Baglier Buick GMC as another location where Bierly had previously committed acts of fraud.

Bierly was charged Wednesday, May 6, with nine felony counts of theft, eight felony counts of receiving stolen property, three felony counts each of deceptive business practices and criminal use of a communication facility, one felony count each of corrupt organizations and bad checks, seven misdemeanor counts of bad checks and misdemeanor securing documents by deception.

Police allege Bierly was coordinating a check fraud scheme that targeted seven dealerships and a private citizen between December and April. Police said he wrote fraudulent personal and business checks associated with the name “Ironopps LLC.” Police said the company is not tied to any legitimate business operations.

Police were made aware of the incidents when they responded April 15 to Power Pro Equipment in Butler. Police said Bierly used a fraudulent check to buy a 2026 ASV RT-65 skid steer valued at $73,560.

The same day, police responded to Smouse Trailer & Snow Equipment in Westmoreland County, where Bierly reportedly purchased a utility trailer and accessories for $18,772.04 using a fraudulent check.

He also allegedly purchased a 2026 Polaris RZR XP S from Hillview Motorsports West in Latrobe valued at $29,299.14 using a fraudulent check. The stolen ATV was later sold on Facebook Marketplace for $10,000, police said.

Police said Bierly also fraudulently purchased a red Chevrolet Silverado from Bowser Chevrolet for $81,752.41, traded it at Smail Kia and was wire-transferred $64,000.

Bierly is being held in Westmoreland County Prison with bail denied. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. May 20 before District Judge Scott Fanchalsky.

In a second case filed April 24, Bierly was charged with two counts each of felony theft and misdemeanor bad checks relating to a black 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe belonging to Choice Auto Sales in Murrysville.

His preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. May 12 before District Judge Judith Petrush in Westmoreland County.
