Fire destroys Summit Township trailer
SUMMIT TWP — A 96-year-old woman and her adult son safely escaped from a fire that decimated their single-wide trailer Tuesday, May 5.
The woman, identified by her granddaughter as Irene Lipscomb, sat in a chair, covered in blankets and surrounded by at least 10 neighbors, as crews put out the fire in the 100 block of Hyvue Lane, located off North Osche Road.
“Anytime it’s a trailer fire, they go pretty quick,” said Capt. Larry Shuler of the Herman Volunteer Fire Company.
The fire appears to have began in the back bedroom of the trailer, he said. The residents were in the front around 8:30 a.m. and saw smoke coming down the hallway, which is when they evacuated and called 911.
Arriving crews saw heavy smoke coming from three sides of the trailer. They quickly went inside and put out the fire in about 10 minutes.
Shuler said the American Red Cross had been notified, but he was unsure if the homeowner had insurance.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Responding companies included the Herman, East Butler, Oneida Valley and Buffalo Township volunteer fire companies; Chicora Volunteer Fire Department; Butler Bureau of Fire; and East Butler EMS.
A GoFundMe page has been established to help the family.
