Butler Township awards garbage contract, bids for road projects

BUTLER TWP — Township residents will have their trash services covered by their current vendor from 2027 through 2030.

Butler Township commissioners voted unanimously Monday evening, May 4, to award the township’s solid waste collection service to Waste Management for the upcoming four years.

They also voted to select Wiest Asphalt Products and Paving for the township’s 19 asphalt projects and Russell Standard for its 13 seal coat projects for this year.

All three sets of bids were opened and ultimately tabled at the April 20 commissioners’ meeting.

Solid waste collection

For trash services, Waste Management — the township’s current service provider — beat out two other bidders, Vogel Disposal Service and County Hauling.

The bid included four items: waste and recycling disposal for a 96-gallon cart and two 30-gallon bags, rear yard service, a request for a second 96-gallon cart for waste and a request for a second 96-gallon cart for recycling.

For weekly trash pickup and biweekly recycling pickup, Waste Management will charge $26.16 per month, per household for 2027, $27.47 in 2028, $28.84 in 2029 and $30.28 in 2030.

For rear yard service, Waste Management will charge $820.63 for the service in 2027 and increase the cost to $949.98 by 2030. As for the second waste and recycling cart, Waste Management would charge $8 per month for either in 2027, which would increase to $9.26 by 2030.

Commissioner Ed Natali said the new contract will also allow residents to recycle glass jars and bottles.

Road projects

The board also awarded road projects which include over 58,000 square yards of milling and almost 24,000 square yards of seal coating. The resurfacing projects also include paving hundreds of feet of each road listed.

The township’s asphalt project for this year was awarded to Wiest Asphalt at a cost of $720,285. It beat out two other bidders, Wright Asphalt and Concrete and Michael Facchiano Contracting.

Township roads that will receive new asphalt include portions of Wyncrest, Mary Beth, Blue Grass, White Oak, Aspen, Oakridge, Fairlane and Foxcroft drives; Old Eberhart and Thornwood roads; Kohler, Wilkes, Harrison, Dewey and Carl avenues and Alton and Pacific streets.

As for the seal coat bid, Russell Standard was awarded the contract at a cost of $123,279. It beat out one other bidder, Midland Asphalt Materials.

Roads receiving seal coating includes portions of Weir, Steelton and Willard avenues; Colleen, Mellon and Fortieth streets; Gregden, Beck, Powdermill, Milt Miller and Reiber roads and Doral and Silver drives.

Work on the projects is expected to take place over the coming months.

The next scheduled Butler Township board of commissioners meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 18.
