Why Butler boys lacrosse isn’t deterred by a decisive loss to North Allegheny: ‘We need to use this experience’

Butler High School's Jake Stevens, seen here during a game last season, scored the Golden Tornado’s only goal on Thursday night against North Allegheny. Ralph LoVuolo/Special to Butler Eagle.

BUTLER TWP — Over the last two weeks, inclement weather forced the suspension of Butler boys lacrosse’s first three games against Shaler, North Catholic and Penn-Trafford.

The Golden Tornado met with a different type of frustration in Thursday’s home game against North Allegheny.

Only Jake Stevens’ tally late in the second quarter kept Butler from being shut out in a 14-1 decision at Art Bernardi Stadium.

“This was the first time this season we’ve been able to play a full game,” Butler coach Justin Steiner said. “North Allegheny is a great team and that’s what we prepared to play.”

Evan Wade put the Tornado down early, scoring just 56 seconds into the game. He and teammate Charlie Jones both scored four times for the Tigers (3-0).

Senior goalie Max Weiland played the first three quarters for Butler, making seven saves.

Butler started three sophomores and a freshman against NA.

“There’s not a big drop-off (in talent) between our guys,” Steiner said. “We have players who have a high lacrosse IQ, and it’s a good mix of veterans and younger guys. Right now, the starting lineup is pretty fluid.”

Butler is now 1-1. It held a 6-2 lead in the fourth quarter of the shortened game against Penn-Trafford and Butler was declared the winner.

The Tornado play at Seneca Valley on Tuesday.

“We made a lot of mental mistakes tonight,” Steiner said. “Losing like we did, it exposes what we need to work on. With every stoppage of play, we told the guys to treat the game like it was 0-0. We need to use this experience, learn from it.”
