A 74-year-old Clearfield Township woman lost $700 to a scammer asking for Apple gift cards, state police said Wednesday, March 25.

Police said the woman was contacted by an unknown man using WhatsApp in May 2025. The woman spoke with the man until Feb. 14 and was under the impression he was coming to visit her and needed money for a plane ticket and taxi, police said.

The woman purchased $700 in Apple gift cards and sent him the card numbers.

He later requested an additional $10,000, which the woman did not send him.

The man did not show up and has not answered phone calls or text messages since.
