Prospect woman charged with cruelty, neglect of animals

A Prospect woman is facing cruelty to animals and neglect charges after state police said 20 animals were found living in poor condition at a home last year.

Ashley M. Ayers, 36, was charged Tuesday with a felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals, 11 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals and 11 misdemeanor counts of neglect of animals.

Police detected an offensive odor emanating from a home on Pfeifer Road in Muddy Creek Township while looking in a window from the porch outside. From the window, police saw feces and garbage scattered throughout the living room floor and multiple dogs running around, according to an affidavit.

Garbage was scattered in the front yard and the back porch was covered with soiled diapers and garbage, but no dog feces were seen in the yard, police said.

After obtaining a search warrant, police entered the home and found six female and one male great Dane puppies, two adult female great Danes, one male pit bull mix and one gray cat. Outside, four ducks and five chickens were found. A large male great Dane died previously, police said.

Ayers, who arrived while police were there, said she didn’t live there and her son was caring for the animals while she was out of town for a week. She said the dogs had been chipped, neutered, had their shots and are fat and healthy, police said.

Police seized the animals and gave them to Anna Shelter, which assisted at the scene. The shelter treated the dogs and reported the dogs vomited socks, police said.

Police dawned hazmat suits to enter the home where they found feces and garbage covering the entire floor, destroyed furniture and blood on a door and walls. The only water was a partially filled bathtub. The basement was in the same condition as the rest of the house, but the windows were boarded up and prevented light from entering, police said.
