Neubert: Eggstravaganza returns to Butler to support Best Buddies with races, games and prizes

A 5K race, 1-mile fun run and an egg hunt sounds like a lot for for day.

Caitlyn Reges agrees, but she and Michelle Yeager have no plans to stop. The two have shared the work (and the fun) of hosting Butler’s Best Buddies Eggstravaganza for the past 7 years as co-race directors. And they’ll have plenty of help from Best Buddies members, families and friends.

Eggstravaganza comes to Butler High School Campus at 10 a.m. Saturday with a competitive Easter Egg Dash 5K starting at Art Bernardi Stadium and looping through intermediate and high school drives. At 11 a.m., the 1-mile Bunny Hop, designed for runners and walkers, makes a single loop of the senior high campus. Both courses are traffic free with a mix of level and hilly terrain.

The Easter Egg Dash 5K offers awards to top three male and female finishers overall and in from age groups from 14U through 60-plus. The Easter Bunny will hand out plaques or medals in the end zone prior to the start of the fun run.

Walkers are welcome, but there is a 1-hour cutoff time since the 1-mile Bunny Hop which follows shares the same course. The 1-mile is timed, but there are no awards. Those who register for the 5K are welcome to participate in the 1-mile for free.

Wheelchairs are permitted within the stadium grounds but dogs and strollers are not. There’s a parking area just outside the gate for those who wish to use their stroller on the rest of the course.

The annual Easter Egg Hunt for kids ages 10 and younger begins at noon at the senior high stadium following the run andwalks. It’s conducted in waves with ages 2 and younger starting first. Eggs contain candy, small prizes or slips of paper associated with a grand prize.

Bags to collect eggs will be available until supplies run out, so participants are encouraged to bring their own. Registration is $5. Kids who register to run or walk get free entry, and kids under 2 run are free but must pay to hunt eggs.

Whether you’re running, walking or watching, there’s plenty of fun for all.

For kids, there are games and activities, face painting, and photos with the Easter Bunny. Adults can purchase tickets to win one of 60 baskets with prizes of Pittsburgh Pirates or Idlewild tickets, Family Bowlaway, Kennywood or Fun for All passes and more. And everyone can enjoy refreshments and snacks.

Online registration for any of the Eggstravaganza events is open until 4 p.m. Friday at runsignup.com/Race/PA/Butler/BestBuddiesEasterEggDash. Day-of event registration opens at 8:45 a.m. Saturday at Art Bernardi Stadium and ends 15 minutes prior to the start of each event. All day-of event registrations and raffle ticket purchases are cash only.

Cailyn Reges expects about 350 participants for this year’s Eggstravaganza, depending on weather. She said the event will go on regardless of conditions.

Eggstravaganza is the main fundraiser for Butler’s Best Buddies, a Butler high school club and part of an international non-profit. Best Buddies, founded in 1989, creates opportunities for one-on-one friendship between students with and without intellectual or developmental disabilities. Buddy pairs talk at least weekly, spend time together at least twice per month and gather as a group for monthly activities. This year’s club includes 140 members with 38 student pairs.

Reges said funds raised in support of Butler’s Best Buddies ensure anyone who is interested in joining the club can participate for free. Reges and Yeager are club advisors for Butler’s Best Buddies and serve as coaches for the high school’s unified bocce team.
