The fun of Harmony’s Shamrock Shuffle is in its challenge, race director says

HARMONY — The Shamrock Shuffle has remained well attended over the past 17 years because it offers one of the few half-marathon races in Butler County.

Not only is it one of the only half-marathons — the race director said runners return each year because they like the challenge of the Shamrock Shuffle, whose course takes runners through two inclines, one being the dreaded Textor Hill Road.

“I think the fact that it’s such a challenging half-marathon is one reason,” said Joella Baker, race director of the Shamrock Shuffle. “Pretty much the same course as last year.”

Nearly 300 people signed up to race in one of three courses Saturday, March 21, which included the half-marathon, a 5K and a 1-mile race. According to Baker, “quite a few” people signed up to run all three for the ultimate running challenge in Harmony.

The half-marathon featured Jell-O shots at the top of Textor Hill Road for people 21 and older, and racers could get some food and drink in Wood Street Park and at the Harmony Inn once they crossed the finish line.

Money raised through the event funds initiatives by the Zelienople Rotary Club, including its scholarships for graduating high school seniors.

Archie Simpson, a member of the Zelienople Rotary Club, said the club gives out six $1,500 scholarships each year.

A longtime member of the Rotary Club, Simpson also remarked Saturday on the different climates that the Shamrock Shuffle has seen over the years, with this year’s event being relatively tame compared to other years.

Brian Jodon, a member of the Zelienople Rotary Club, said he has seen it snow on the day of the Shamrock Shuffle.

“On year we had to wait for the snow plows to come,” Jodon said.

Simpson said that regardless of the weather on race day, the Shamrock Shuffle regularly attracts people from all over to race. He said there are usually at least four states represented at the event.

“One year we had a family from Michigan come in,” Simpson said. “There were 14 of them, they were all runners and they just jumped right in.”
