SAXONBURG — Good food at a good price for a good cause brought people from all over Butler County to Saxonburg VFW Post 7376 on Saturday, March 14.

Volunteers from the VFW cook and sell breakfast every other Saturday morning through the end of March to raise money for more utility pole banners honoring military veterans. A June 6 golf outing at the Saxonburg Golf Course is another fundraiser for the banners.

Morgan Burns, who leads the fundraising efforts, said the VFW raised enough money to have 62 banners erected in time for Veterans Day last year in what she called “round one” of the effort.

For the second round of banners this year, the VFW has gathered information for 40 more veterans so far.

“This is an ongoing, living project,” Burns said.

The banners will be placed on poles along Main Street and some side streets in the borough with help from the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company, she said.

“If we run out of polls, we’ll work with other townships,” Burns said.

The existing banners stood strong against Friday night’s wind storm.

“The wind was a really good test. They’re still up,” Burns said.

Many people said the come to the breakfast to honor veterans.

“We’ve got to support our veterans,” said Carol Freehling of Cabot.

Ken Govan of Saxonburg echoes that sentiment.

“I like to give when I can for people who do what they do for us,” Govan said. “Good breakfast. They treat you well.”

Terry and Ray Anderson of Sarver and Laura and Jim Gizienski of Penn Township shared a table.

“Good cause and good food and a good price,” said Ray Anderson.

“I think it’s a great thing,” said Jim Gizienski.

Both men had brothers that served in Vietnam and will appear in the second round of banners.

“It’s a nice community gathering also,” said Laura Gizienski.

Jefferson Township Supervisor Lois Rankin said she is happy to support the banner project.

“It’s a good old country breakfast. There’s a lot of community support,” she said.

Her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Julianna Rankin, of Jefferson Township, also said they come to every fundraising breakfast. Robert Rankin said his grandfather’s banner was hung up in the first round.

Information about the breakfasts and gold outing are available at VFW7376.org.
