3 of 4 Michigan men charged in racketeering scheme sentenced

Three of four Michigan men charged with making fraudulent purchases using dozens of credit cards were sentenced this week in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Parys K. Warren, 25, and Anthony J. Williams, 21, both of Detroit, were sentenced Thursday, Feb. 26; and Eric K.D. Horton, 25, also of Michigan, was sentenced Tuesday. All were sentenced by Judge Maura Palumbi. Co-defendant Kevin J. Morris, 24, of Detroit, is awaiting sentencing.

Warren and Williams pleaded guilty to felony charges of access device fraud, theft by deception and conspiracy to commit theft by deception filed by Cranberry Township police, and a misdemeanor count of theft by deception filed by Butler Township police.

They were sentenced to serve 23 1/2 months of parole followed by 24 months of probation, pay $500 fines and pay $2,998 in restitution: $2,483 in the Cranberry Township case and $515 in the Butler Township case.

Horton, who was charged in the Cranberry Township case only, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of theft by deception and was sentenced to serve up to five months in prison and pay $2,483 in restitution.

All four defendants have been held in the county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail in the Cranberry Township case since their arrest on Sept. 18. Bail was set at $25,000 in the Butler Township case.

In the Cranberry Township case, Warren, Morris and Williams were dropped off at Walmart by a Chevrolet Blazer driven by Horton, according to police.

While Horton waited in the vehicle, the other three men entered the store and selected various items. Using the Walmart Pay system, they made 31 transactions with multiple stolen credit cards at several registers in a span of 23 minutes. They purchased prepaid Mastercards using fraudulent coupons, most of them being in the range of $50 to $60. The transactions, according to the criminal complaint, totaled $2,593.

Police said the men committed similar acts at Walmart stores in Mercer County, Michigan and Ohio.

In the Butler Township case, Warren, Williams and Morris entered Walmart on Sept. 21 and completed eight transactions totaling $515 between 11:35 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. using four separate credit cards, according to police.

The men approached registers separately and made single transactions using Walmart Pay. The transactions included various items and prepaid gift cards, police said. Walmart Pay is used by scanning a QR code at checkout connected to the payment method associated with the account, which were credit cards in these cases.
