Butler County commissioners on Wednesday awarded $2.7 million in contracts to upgrade SEBCO Pool in Jefferson Township.

The pool will not open this summer to accommodate the renovation work, said Lance Welliver, county parks and recreation director.

Bids for the project totaling just under $3.5 million were originally opened last summer. However, they exceeded the township’s initial $1.1 million estimate and were rejected. At that time, the township had secured two state grants for the project.

The county readvertised for bids and they were opened in December. The township also obtained additional grant money. However, the $2.7 million cost of the low bids was still $600,000 more than the township had available.

In January, the township received an additional $125,000 state grant. That grant will be combined with the two other state grants to provide $925,000, which is being combined with a $150,000 donation from a family trust to fund the project.

The contracts awarded Wednesday are based on the set of bids opened in December.

Main Line Commercial Pools was awarded a $2.46 million contract for pool improvement, Blackhawk Neff Electric was awarded a $166,600 contract for electrical work and Newman Plumbing, Inc. was awarded a $74,480 contract for plumbing work.

The project includes a new pool liner, electric upgrades, new decking, repair of the underground supply and return lines, demolition of the existing filter room, construction of a new filter room and replacing mechanical equipment.

In other business, commissioners approved a polling place change for the upcoming primary for the Zelienople 2 voting precinct to the Zelienople Area Public Library, 227 South High Street from the American Legion Post 474 on West New Castle Street.
