County accepting Butler city tax payments
Butler city property owners will receive one tax bill from the Butler County treasurer’s office containing city and county real estate taxes and city per capita taxes. They can pay all the bills with one check.
Treasurer Diane Marburger announced the new tax payment arrangement with the city during Wednesday’s county commissioners meeting. She said the arrangement streamlines what was a cumbersome billing system.
Using a married couple as an example, Marburger said the couple used to receive two to four tax bills — one real estate tax bill from the city, one real estate tax bill from the county and the couple would receive individual per capita tax bills from the city.
“All these taxes are now on one bill, payable at one location, which is the county treasurer’s office either by mail, in person or online,” Marburger said.
She said her office will remit the city taxes to the city’s treasurer’s office.
In the past, many city property owners would go to the county treasurer’s office wanting to pay city and county real estate taxes, but she said she could not accept tax payments on behalf of the city and would direct them to the city treasurer’s office.
The city treasurer’s office experienced the same problem with property owners coming in trying to pay city and county real estate taxes, Marburger said.
“Sometimes (taxpayers) would really complicate the matter when they would write one check combining both taxes in one payment that needed to be split between the city and the county.
“With this new change in 2026, the inconvenience to the taxpayer of having to manage multiple tax bills, the inconvenience of going to two different locations, the inconvenience to write multiple checks and mail them to two different locations is all eliminated,” Marburger said.
She said the new payment system benefits the city and county governments and taxpayers by reducing printing, envelope, material and postage costs.
Marburger commended the numerous city and county officials who she said helped create the new system.
