Butler man sentenced to up to 12 years in prison for 2024 Brady Township break in
An elderly woman who still suffers from fear and trust issues nearly two years after a break in at her Brady township home saw the second of two men who admitted to the incident learn his fate Tuesday, Feb. 24.
Herbert D. Zellefrow Jr., 54, of Butler, was sentenced Tuesday serve from 4 years and 6 months to 12 years in state prison by Common Pleas Court Judge Joseph Kubit after pleading guilty to felony robbery, burglary and firearms charges filed by state police for his role in the May 2024 break-in.
A woman who spoke on behalf of the victim said she continues to have issues that began after the incident. The stolen jewelry included her mother’s diamond engagement ring and the stolen money had been set aside for roof and house repairs that were supposed to be done the same week the break in occurred.
Zellefrow apologized for his actions before the sentence was imposed.
Police charged Zellefrow and co-defendant Damean M. Felmlee, 30, of Parker with breaking into the victim’s home May 6. The pair went to the home under the pretense of asking her to sign a gun rights petition, which she declined. Afterward, the pair asked to use her house phone, telling her their vehicle had broken down.
According to police, the following morning, the pair returned to the woman’s house armed with guns. According to an affidavit, the pair zip-tied the woman’s hands behind her back, held her at gunpoint and took $10,000 from her bedroom dresser. The pair stole multiple firearms, prescription Vicodin, two telephone handsets and jewelry. She was able to free herself and call 911 after they left her home.
Zellefrow was sentenced to 54 to 144 months in prison for robbery, a concurrent 24 to 48 months for burglary, a concurrent 24 to 48 months for conspiracy to commit robbery, a concurrent 16 to 32 months for conspiracy to commit robbery and a concurrent 12 to 24 months for firearms not to be carried without a license. He was fined a total of $600 and ordered to pay $13,300 in restitution to the victim who was 82 at the time of the incident and have no contact with her. He was given credit for having served 639 days in the Butler County Prison. The sentence included 12 months of reentry supervision after his release from prison.
Felmlee was sentenced in January to service 5 to 12 years in state prison and pay $13,300 in restitution after pleading guilty to charges in three cases related to the break in.
In addition to charges for the break in, Felmlee was charged with retaliating against the victim and escaping from police custody while being taken to his preliminary hearing for the retaliation charge.
