Connoquenessing Township considers zoning, OKs proposal to shape future development

CONNOQUENESSING TWP — Supervisors at a meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 4, approved a proposal to move forward with zoning regulations, taking a key step toward shaping the municipality’s future development.

Supervisors accepted a $48,000 proposal from LSSE Civil Engineers and Surveyors, one of three engineering firms that had submitted plans.

The decision comes after months of discussion and presentations from LSSE Civil Engineers and Surveyors, Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, and EADS Group. Township officials had tabled action in December to allow for further review.

Supervisor Angela Fleeger previously said cost would play a significant factor in the board’s decision, but emphasized the importance of selecting a firm capable of guiding the township through the zoning process.

“LSSE was already familiar with the township, our ordinances and ongoing planning efforts, which allows for efficiency, continuity and responsible use of public funds,” she said. “Engaging LSSE to assist the planning commission ensures the zoning plan work moves forward in a thorough, cost-effective and well coordinated manner.”

Township leaders have pointed to anticipated residential and commercial growth over the next decade as a driving factor behind the move toward zoning. Much of Connoquenessing Township remains rural, with farms and open land that residents have a desire to preserve.

Under the agreement, LSSE Civil Engineers and Surveyors will begin reviewing existing ordinances and coordinating with Butler County and its planning commission as part of drafting an official zoning ordinance.

The work will also align with the township’s Act 537 sewage plan submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection last summer.
