Mars library closed until ‘further notice’

The Mars Area Public Library announced Friday, Feb. 6, it would close until “further notice,” after first closing Tuesday because of flooding damage caused by a January snowstorm.

The library, which sits on Grand Avenue in Mars, made the announcement in a Facebook post.

The snowstorm caused flooding damage, which was first spotted on Jan. 29 and was initially contained to a small area before it spread, according to library director Janae Callihan.

She said the leaks were caused by ice dams that formed along the roof.

Although the library was open for a few days, staff warned patrons through social media their library experience could be different for at least the next few days, before announcing it would close again.

Additionally, the library updated its website with a new page to accept donations to offset the expense of repairs, which it says will be costly.
