Woman’s daughter sues stepfather over motorcycle crash that killed mother

The daughter of a woman killed in a July 2025 motorcycle crash has filed a wrongful-death suit against her stepfather who was driving the bike with her mother aboard during the annual Riding for the Cure benefit ride.

Judy Watt, daughter of the late Betty E. Campbell, of Butler, filed the suit last week in Butler County Common Pleas Court against her stepfather, Douglas B. Campbell Jr., seeking damages in excess of $35,000 and a jury trial.

In the one-count suit alleging negligence, Watt, of Butler, said her mother, who was 66, and Douglas Campbell, who was 69 at the time, were participating in the annual ride on July 26. The suit alleges Douglas Campbell was impaired at the time of the crash.

He consumed alcohol before the crash and was taking prescription medications that had an adverse reaction with the consumed alcohol, according to the suit.

State police, who responded to the crash, have not filed charges against Douglas Campbell, who was flown to Allegheny General Hospital with injuries from the crash. Betty Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suit states participants, including Douglas Campbell, met at 11 a.m. at American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora where they consumed alcohol before getting back on their motorcycles and riding to the Belmont II restaurant in Center Township.

Douglas Campbell, who now lives in Uniontown, Ohio, and other participants drank at the restaurant before returning to their bikes and heading toward the Beer Garden Sports Bar & Grille on Oneida Valley Road (Route 38) in Washington for lunch when, according to the suit, the crash took place.

Douglas Campbell was operating a 2011 Can-Am Spyder with Betty Campbell on the back seat around 1 p.m. traveling south on Route 38 approaching Annisville Road when the bike crossed the center line and struck a guardrail on the northbound side of the road, according to the suit.

Betty Campbell was thrown from the bike as it went down an embankment and continued into a creek.

Betty and Douglas Campbell were married on July 18, 1998. Douglas Campbell could not be reached for comment.

The annual ride raises money for cancer patients, and, according to organizers, has raised $500,000 for local cancer patients over the last 14 years.
