AG, consumer protection warn of weather, utility scams

Scam Alert DME

Scams involving weather and utility services are on the rise with winter storms sweeping across the state, the Pennsylvania attorney general and Bureau of Consumer Protection announced Monday, Jan.26.

“Following major storms and other disaster-type events, scammers are on the prowl looking to take advantage,” Attorney General Dave Sunday said. “Scammers don’t take a snow day, so it is important to always stay vigilant.”

Sunday added it’s also a good time for customers to speak with utility companies about cost-saving measures and potential scams.

To avoid scams, the Bureau of Consumer Protection recommends verifying potential contractors by reading all contracts and requesting proof of insurance, watch for potential scammers claiming to represent a utility company, watch what you pay, avoid social media advertisements and never rush into a payment.

It also recommended never using gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency and apps like Venmo or Zelle to pay bills. The best way to make a payment to an unknown provider is using a credit card, which may have additional protections.

The attorney general also recommends consumers needing assistance with utilities enroll in budget billing, review contracts with suppliers, weatherize your home and apply for assistance.
