Woman sentenced for assaulting police, hospital staff

A Butler woman was given a state prison sentence Thursday, Jan. 22, in Butler County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to charges in connection with the assault of police and Butler Memorial Hospital staff in three incidents.

Margaret Durler, 46, was sentenced to concurrently serve 18 to 42 months in prison followed by 12 months of probation and pay $100 in restitution to Butler Township police and $72.25 to township commissioners in plea agreements reached in each case. The sentence reflected the penalty handed down for charges in her first case, as the other two cases received equal or lesser sentences.

She pleaded guilty to a felony charge of aggravated assault in response to charges Butler City police filed March 20, 2024, accusing her of resisting arrest and attempting to spit on an officer.

Her initial charges also included assault of a police officer, resisting arrest, false identification and simple assault.

Durler pleaded guilty to a separate felony charge of aggravated assault filed by Butler Township police following a June 29 incident at the hospital where she is accused of spitting on security guards and throwing a metal tray at a nurse. She was sentenced to seven months to 36 months in prison concurrent to the other prison sentence followed by 12 months of probation.

Two security guards told police Durler spit on their faces in the emergency room. A case manager informed police later that Durler tested positive for hepatitis and was using controlled substances. A nurse accused Durler of throwing a metal tray at her. The nurse was not injured.

She was initially charged with three counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment.

In the third case, Durler pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct filed by Butler Township police following a Jan. 1, 2024, incident and was sentenced to concurrently serve 12 months of probation and pay the restitution.

Police said she refused to cooperate with hospital staff and police at the hospital and smeared blood on the inside of a police vehicle.

She was initially charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and harassment.

She is being held in the Butler County prison in lieu of $110,00 bail combined in all three cases.
