Lancaster Township is beginning the search for its next township manager. Mary Hess, who came on as manager in 2023, had her resignation accepted by the board of supervisors during their meeting on Monday night, Jan. 19.

However, Hess will remain as township manager until the end of January, as that is when the resignation will take effect.

“I’m resigning because I have a new opportunity elsewhere, and I'll be starting a new position somewhere else,” Hess said to the Butler Eagle, although she declined to state what that position was.

The township has already begun advertising the open manager position on their website. According to Hess, the interview process has only started.

Parks and recreation board

At their next meeting in February, the board of supervisors will vote on an ordinance to create a formal, seven-member parks and recreation board.

The object of the board is to advise the supervisors on the use, maintenance, and improvement of the township’s two recreation centers: Bauder Park and the Community Center building.

“They will have a formalized agenda and action committees in order to get projects done, so they can apply for more grants,” Hess said.

While the township already has a parks and recreation board in place, Hess says that the current board is more informal in nature, and was not created by an official ordinance.

“It wasn't done by ordinance before, so we’re creating a more formal structure,” Hess said.
