Police: Butler man struck by vehicle in hit-and-run crash
A Butler man flew several feet into a nearby parked car after being struck by a vehicle Saturday afternoon, Jan. 17, according to a neighbor who spoke with the Butler Eagle on Monday afternoon.
Jeff Goeppner, of Butler, said his neighbor, James Perry, was seriously injured in the 2 p.m. hit-and-run crash, which left a dent in Goeppner’s vehicle.
Butler City police said the 67-year-old Butler man was thrown into the parked vehicle after being hit by a black Dodge Dart traveling at high speeds. The vehicle was traveling east on East Brady Street when it left the road, went onto the sidewalk and into a yard.
Police did not name the driver of the Dodge Dart or file charges Monday afternoon. The Dodge Dart left the scene and was located later, police said. Initially, the vehicle was believed to be a Kia Sedan.
Emergency crews were dispatched at 2:03 p.m. to the incident near the intersection of East Brady and North Monroe streets. Butler Bureau of Fire Chief Chris Switala said Butler Ambulance Service was notified of the incident when a vehicle was flagged down by a bystander.
Butler Ambulance Service was already on scene treating the patient when fire services arrived, Switala said. Fire crews arrived at 2:06 p.m. and left the scene at 2:18 p.m., he said.
Goeppner said Butler City police knocked on his door around 2:30 p.m. Saturday to explain the dent in his car from the crash.
Goeppner, who lives across the alley from Perry on East Brady Street, said his neighbor was struck by a vehicle and was knocked eight to 10 feet into his car, which caused the dent.
Goeppner said Perry is a veteran, and he occasionally sees him loading poles into his car to go fishing with his friends. Goeppner said another neighbor had spoken with Perry’s family and reported he’s recovering from two broken legs and internal bleeding.
A GoFundMe started by his daughter, Amelia Perry, said James Perry was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital had a surgical nail placed in his lower left leg. The effort raised $225 in its first hour.
Responding agencies included Butler City police, Butler Bureau of Fire. StatMed Evac flew the man from Butler Memorial Hospital.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
