Moraine, McConnells Mill starting 2026 in style
Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks have multiple events planned for January and February, including one event to commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the nation.
Jan. 19, 1 p.m. — In October 2024, America250PA of Butler County planted a “Liberty Tree” outside the Moraine State Park office on the South Shore as part of the lead-up to the 250th anniversary celebrations. On Jan. 19, the park will hold a “Liberty Tree Hike” starting from the site of Moraine’s tree, along the 2-mile Pleasant Valley Trail. Participants are advised to bring sturdy footwear.
Jan. 31, 11 a.m. — Moraine State Park’s annual Winterfest, organized by the Moraine Preservation Fund, will showcase all that the park has to offer. Features include guided hikes, live music, horse-drawn wagon rides, disc golf and a soup contest, which is making its second appearance after its successful debut last year.
Feb. 6, 1 p.m. — Staff from Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will lead visitors on a guided walk through McConnells Mill State Park to teach the basics of winter tree identification. Participants will meet at Kildoo Pavilion.
Feb. 16, 8:30 a.m. — Moraine State Park is hosting a Go Teach Educator Workshop on hiking and snowshoeing in the State Park Region 2 Conference Room. This course is open to all types educators, and will provide them with the means to bring the wonders of hiking and snowshoeing to K-12 students. Registration is required. Cost is $20. Participants will receive Act 48 hours.
