Train derails near Slippery Rock, spilling iron ore pellets
A Canadian National Railway train derailed on New Year’s Day, Thursday, near Industrial Drive near Slippery Rock.
According to an incident report from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, the train consisted of open-top hopper cars carrying iron ore pellets.
While the total number of cars was not reported, the report stated 25 derailed, spilling iron ore pellets into the surrounding environment.
The locomotive carrying the cars stayed on the tracks and left the scene shortly after the incident.
A cleanup contractor and an emergency response team member from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection were dispatched to the scene.
“There is no estimate on how long cleanup will take,” the report states.
No injuries were reported in the derailment. According to the report, the derailed cars “will likely be scrapped.”
