Man claims hospital treatment led to leg amputation

A Butler Township man is suing the Butler Health System claiming treatment he received for a blood flow problem in his left calf ultimately resulted in an amputation.

Darren Huber, of Butler Township, filed the suit seeking unspecified damages against the health system, Butler Memorial Hospital and doctors Brandon Repko, Thomas Franco and Vincent Lattari who treated him in November and December 2022.

The suit was transferred to Butler County Common Pleas Court on Dec. 12 after Huber filed the suit last year in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.

According to the suit, Huber went to the emergency department on Nov. 21 with a limp and history of numbness in his lower left leg. An evaluation revealed extensive thrombus in arteries extending into his lower left leg.

Repko performed a catheter procedure Nov. 22. The next day, Repko performed additional procedures involving stents and recanalization of the tibia artery, according to the suit.

Following two radiology treatments, Huber was discharged Nov. 25 and told to follow up with Repko on Dec. 28. On Dec. 1, he visited his primary care doctor who recommended he return to the hospital due to numbness in the calf, according to the suit.

At the hospital, Franco determined Huber would be reevaluated after undergoing an arterial imaging study on Dec. 2. On Dec. 2, Lattari performed a thrombolysis using a catheter. After 21 hours of catheter-directed thrombolysis, it was determined that the stents were not allowing blood flow in the calf, according to the suit.

Huber was then transferred to UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he underwent three unsuccessful vascular surgical procedures from Dec. 5 to Dec. 9. As a result of the failed procedures, the decision was made that the only course of action was amputation below the knee. The amputation was performed Dec. 13 and he was discharged later that month, according to the suit.

The suit includes counts of negligence against each doctor and the health system, which declined to comment on the suit.
