White Christmas not in forecast this year for Butler County
Those in Western Pennsylvania who are looking forward to a “White Christmas” will have to turn to the movie, as Mother Nature has different plans in store this year.
Forecasts from the National Weather Service call for a warm and wet — but not white — Christmas for Butler County this year. Temperatures are expected to reach as high as 53 degrees on Thursday, with a 60% chance of rain in the forecast.
“We're getting into a period where warmer air is being pulled in from the southwest, and temperatures are becoming more moderate each day,” said meteorologist Matt Brudy of the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.
He said the chance of snow isn’t impossible, but very unlikely.
“There's going to be a quick disturbance moving through in the morning,” he said. I can't rule out a little bit of rain/snow mix, especially in the morning hours, but at this point it looks like mostly rain.”
According to data from the National Weather Service, the average temperature on Christmas Day since 1875 in the wider Pittsburgh area is 37.8 degrees, with an all-time record high of 67 (set in 1895) and an all-time record low of 12 below (set in 1983).
The last time the wider Pittsburgh area experienced a “White Christmas” was 2020, when 5.1 inches of snow fell.
