JEFFERSON TWP — A picturesque blanket of snow fell on this year’s showing of the annual winter Nativity scene at the Concordia at Cabot senior living facility.

Frank Skrip, public relations director for Concordia Lutheran Services, said the live Nativity — which is in its 12th year — typically draws hundreds of spectators, including some from other Concordia facilities across Pennsylvania.

“It takes a village to put on an event like this,” Skrip said. “We probably have 15 or so people that are in the cast, and then another 15 or so people that help with the planning. Then we also get some help from St. Luke Lutheran Church’s youth group.”

Visitors had little trouble finding the the Nativity scene on the Concordia at Cabot site, as the road to the event was lined with “luminaries” — milk jugs with lights inside.

“They're called luminaries, and they just light the path that goes to the Nativity,” Skrip said.

Concordia’s Nativity scene featured live animals. This year, Concordia secured multiple animals, including a real camel, from the Barnyard Petting Zoo in Eighty Four, Pa., in Washington County.

“They've been supplying animals to Concordia for years for this event,” Skrip said. “We can choose between an adult camel and a baby camel, so we've got the adult camel coming, along with sheep and goats and a donkey for Mary and Joseph.”

Intermissions between Nativity scene showings featured musical performances from Redeemer Lutheran School in Oakmont and St Luke Lutheran School in Winfield Township. The former also performed a set as an opener to the show.
