Woman gets probation sentence in farmers market assault
A Butler woman charged with assaulting another woman and three Butler police officers at the Butler Farmers market in July was sentenced to probation.
Niya A. Adams, 25, was sentenced Thursday to serve 9 to 18 months in prison, but was immediately paroled to serve 18 months of probation, pay a $250 fine and complete 20 hours of community service after pleading guilty to aggravated assault.
Police charged with Adams with four felony counts of aggravated assault, a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest and summary charges of public drunkenness, harassment, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief following the July 14 incident.
Police said they responded to reports of a woman yelling around 2:30 a.m. and found Adams aggressively approaching another woman. Police said Adams immediately fell when pushed away from the woman and smelled like alcohol.
When officers attempted to take Adams into custody, she pushed one in the chest, punched a second in the face, causing bleeding, and fought with a third, leaving cuts and abrasions, police said. Bystanders told officers that Adams punched the woman in the face.
Adams resisted being put into a patrol vehicle and continually kicked inside the vehicle, police said.
